Nobody writes a seven-figure check into a company without diligence. You examine the model, the market, and the founder before the money moves, because the cost of finding out later is the whole investment.

Families do the opposite. They commit a decade of a child’s life and a large share of their savings to a path chosen at sixteen, and the one input nobody buys is evidence about the person the plan depends on.

What is cognitive due diligence?

It is the same discipline, pointed at the decision that actually costs the most. Before the coaching contract is signed and before the elective track is locked, you measure how the student takes in information, how they handle pressure and ambiguity, and what genuinely motivates them. Then you choose the path.

That order sounds obvious written down. It is almost never what happens.

Why are the odds the wrong thing to argue about?

The numbers are widely reported and worth stating plainly. India’s engineering entrance admits on the order of one percent of the students who sit it. The civil services exam is roughly one tenth of that. China’s national exam draws over thirteen million candidates for a narrow band of elite places. Ivy League admission rates now sit below five percent.

These exams were not a mistake. In the twentieth century they were extraordinary equalizers, stripping out patronage and lifting millions on measured merit. That is worth defending.

But an admissions filter is not a career plan. The odds are not the problem. The problem is that a family reads those odds as a reason to prepare harder, when they are actually a reason to ask a prior question: is this path a fit for this particular mind, before we spend four years finding out?

Why does more preparation make it worse?

Because preparation and aptitude are not substitutes.

A student with high preparation and aligned aptitude is in a winnable position. A student with high preparation and misaligned aptitude is in the worst position available: visibly working harder than everyone around them, producing results that look adequate, and paying for it privately. Grades hold. Something else does not.

This is the pattern we see most often in the room. A student with strong verbal reasoning and unremarkable spatial reasoning is pointed at surgery. Another with a high tolerance for ambiguity is pointed at a field that rewards procedure. Neither lacks discipline. Both were measured against the wrong benchmark, and both will be described as having failed to apply themselves.

That description is the expensive part. It sends the family back for another year of preparation, which is the one intervention that cannot address the problem. It is the same mechanism behind synthetic competence, where the cost stays private for a decade before it surfaces.

What do these exams actually select for?

Speed under timed pressure, memorization, and pattern recognition on known forms.

Those were reasonable proxies for capability in 1985. They are weaker proxies now, for a practical reason: current AI systems already perform at or near the top of those same standardized formats. Training a generation for years on precisely the tasks that software has commoditized is a strategic error, not a moral one.

The filter is narrow in a second way. It rewards one profile, the fast processor who performs under timed pressure, and quietly screens out minds that organize information differently but produce original work. A system optimized for a single cognitive style will systematically miss the people who think unlike it.

There is a third cost, and it shows up in behavior. When success is defined as outscoring the person beside you by a decimal, collaboration stops being rational. Measurement changes that framing. A student who knows their aptitude sits in design, and their friend’s sits in engineering, is no longer in a zero-sum contest.

What should a family do first?

Reallocate one month of the preparation budget.

That is the entire recommendation. Not less ambition, not a softer school, not a lecture about balance. Take a fraction of what is already committed to coaching and spend it on measuring the student first, before the elective track is locked and before the fees are paid.

Measurement will not promise an outcome, and anyone who promises one is selling something. What it does is change the order of operations. It tells you which paths are statistically winnable for this person, which ones require them to fight their own wiring every day, and what the honest alternatives are.

The most useful thing you can give a sixteen-year-old is not help clearing the hardest exam in the country. It is a path where they do not have to work against their own nature to do well.
